Mental Health Crisis Resource Pages:
Outpatient Services
Outpatient services involve regular appointments with a therapist, counselor, or psychiatrist. Services may include individual therapy, group therapy, and medication management.
Purpose: To provide ongoing mental health treatment while allowing individuals to live independently at home or in their community.
Targeted Case Management (TCM)
TCM helps individuals with serious mental illness access needed services and supports. Case managers work with clients to develop a plan and connect them to medical, housing, employment, and social services.
Purpose: To coordinate care and help individuals navigate the system, ensuring access to essential services.
Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services (ARMHS)
ARMHS provides skills training and support to help adults with mental illness manage their symptoms and achieve greater independence. Services may include help with medication management, social skills, and basic daily tasks like budgeting and cooking.
Purpose: To improve functioning and help individuals live more independently in the community.

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)
ACT is an intensive, community-based service for individuals with severe mental illness who struggle with traditional outpatient care. A multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive services such as therapy, medication management, crisis intervention, and case management, often in the individual's home.
Purpose: To prevent hospitalization and support recovery by providing 24/7 treatment and support in the community.
More Information: https://mn.gov/dhs/people-we-serve/seniors/health-care/mental-health/programs-services/act.jsp
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
IOPs provide more frequent therapy sessions, typically several hours, 3-5 days a week. Services focus on group therapy but may also include individual therapy and medication management.
Purpose: To offer structured support while allowing individuals to continue living at home and maintaining daily activities.
Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)
PHPs offer full-day therapy sessions, 5-7 days a week, but do not require overnight stays. The program involves individual, group, and family therapy, as well as psychiatric evaluation and medication management.
Purpose: To provide comprehensive care for individuals who need more structure and support than IOP but do not require inpatient care.
Intensive Residential Treatment Services (IRTS)
IRTS is a short-term residential treatment option for individuals experiencing significant mental health challenges. These programs provide 24/7 care and support, including therapy, skills training, medication management, and help with transitioning back to the community.
Purpose: To stabilize individuals in a structured setting and prepare them for independent living or less intensive care.
Crisis Stabilization
Crisis stabilization services offer short-term, 24-hour care in crisis homes or stabilization units for individuals experiencing mental health crises. Services include monitoring, crisis intervention, and connecting individuals to ongoing mental health care.
Purpose: To prevent hospitalization by addressing crises in a safe, supervised setting.
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment provides 24-hour care in a residential facility for individuals needing intensive, long-term mental health treatment. Treatment includes therapy, medication management, life skills training, and support for transitioning back into the community.
Purpose: To provide a structured environment for individuals to focus on recovery without the pressures of daily life.
Inpatient Hospitalization
Inpatient hospitalization offers short-term, intensive treatment in a hospital setting for individuals in acute psychiatric distress, such as suicidal thoughts or psychosis. Inpatient care includes 24-hour supervision, medical and psychiatric assessments, and intensive therapy.
Purpose: To stabilize individuals in crisis and develop a treatment plan for aftercare, often transitioning to lower levels of care.
Assertive Residential Mental Health Services (ARMS)
ARMS provides a higher level of supervision and structure in a residential setting for individuals who require long-term treatment. ARMS combines mental health care and skills training to help individuals transition to less restrictive environments.
Purpose: To provide a highly structured living environment with long-term mental health support.
State-Operated Forensic or Civil Commitment Hospitals
These secure psychiatric facilities are for individuals committed by the courts due to severe mental illness. They provide long-term psychiatric care, medication management, therapy, and legal oversight.
Purpose: To treat individuals who require the highest level of care due to their mental health needs, often related to civil commitment or involvement in the criminal justice system.
Minnesota State-Operated Psychiatric Hospitals
State-run psychiatric hospitals provide long-term, intensive mental health care for individuals with chronic mental illnesses who cannot be treated safely in less restrictive environments.
Purpose: To deliver specialized, ongoing treatment for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness requiring long-term hospitalization and supervision.
